Kavya’s Twin Maternity Photography Session | Four Locations Across Wellington

Pregnancy is already such a special chapter in a couple’s life, but expecting twins brings an entirely different kind of excitement and anticipation. When Kavya approached me for her maternity photography session, I knew we had an opportunity to create something truly meaningful.

Rather than keeping the session to a single location, we planned a journey across Wellington, bringing together the coastline, dramatic landscapes, lush gardens and, finally, the comfort of home. Each location added a different feeling to the story while allowing us to capture the love, connection and anticipation surrounding the arrival of their two little ones.

Celebrating Kavya’s Twin Maternity Journey

Some maternity sessions are special because of the location. Others are special because of the people and the story behind them. Kavya’s maternity photo session was special to me for both reasons.

This was the first time in my photography journey that I had the opportunity to photograph a client expecting twins. Knowing that I was documenting such an important chapter in Kavya’s life made this session particularly meaningful to me.

We also wanted her maternity gallery to have plenty of variety. Rather than photographing the entire session in one location, we explored four very different settings around Wellington — Titahi Bay Beach, Whitireia Park, Wellington Botanic Garden, and the comfort of her own home. The result was a collection of pregnancy photographs with four completely different moods, while telling one beautiful story.

Titahi Bay Beach – Starting by the Ocean

We started Kavya’s pregnancy photoshoot at Titahi Bay Beach, where the open coastline gave us a beautiful and relaxed setting.

The beach created a sense of space and simplicity. We spent time walking along the shoreline, capturing natural interactions and allowing Kavya and her partner to enjoy the experience rather than focusing entirely on posing. The combination of the ocean, open sky and soft natural light gave these photographs a timeless coastal feel.

As an expert photographer, maternity photography isn’t just about photographing the baby bump. It is about documenting the connection between the parents and the anticipation of meeting their little ones.

Whitireia Park – Dramatic Coastal Landscapes

From Titahi Bay, we moved to Whitireia Park, which gave the session a completely different look. The expansive landscape, coastal views and rugged surroundings created more dramatic portraits and allowed us to incorporate the beauty of the Wellington region into the photographs.

This is one of the reasons I enjoy planning multi-location maternity portraits. Within the same shoot, we can create photographs that feel completely different without losing the connection between them. One location can give you soft and intimate portraits, while another can create something bold and cinematic.

Wellington Botanic Garden – A Softer, Natural Feel

Our next stop was Wellington Botanic Garden, surrounded by greenery and beautiful natural textures. After the openness of the beach and the dramatic landscape of Whitireia Park, the gardens brought a softer and more romantic atmosphere to the session.

The greenery provided a beautiful natural backdrop for maternity portraits, while the different paths and surroundings gave us plenty of opportunities to create variation throughout the gallery. I love using locations that offer different textures and backgrounds because it means we can keep creating something new rather than photographing the same composition repeatedly.

At Home – The Most Personal Part of the Session

We finished the session at Kavya’s home. While outdoor locations can provide beautiful landscapes and dramatic portraits, there is something very special about photographing a family in their own space.

The lounge gave us a relaxed and intimate environment where Kavya and her partner could simply be themselves. These artistic photographs are often some of my favourites because they capture a different side of the maternity journey — the quiet moments, the comfort of home and the anticipation of welcoming two new members into the family.

For me, these photographs aren’t just portraits. They are memories of the place where this next chapter was about to begin..

A Maternity Session I Will Always Remember

As a photographer, every session is an opportunity to create something meaningful, but some sessions stay with you a little longer. Kavya’s session is one of those for me.

It was my first maternity session with a client expecting twins, and that alone made it a milestone in my photography journey. But what made it even more special was the opportunity to document the excitement, connection and anticipation surrounding the arrival of two little ones.

Looking back at the photographs now that Kavya has welcomed her twins makes the experience even more meaningful. These images are a reminder of a very small window in time — when two little lives were still on their way, and their parents were waiting to meet them.

I feel very grateful that I was able to document that chapter for Kavya and her family.
