Sarayu’s Bharatanatyam Arangetram in Lower Hutt | Event Photographer

An Arangetram is more than a stage performance—it is the culmination of years of learning, discipline, dedication and love for Bharatanatyam. For a young dancer, it marks a significant milestone: the moment when years of training come together in front of family, friends, teachers and the wider community.

Sarayu’s Bharatanatyam Arangetram in Lower Hutt was a beautiful celebration of that journey. From the anticipation before she stepped onto the stage to the graceful movements, expressive storytelling and moments of pride shared by her family, there was so much to document. As an event photographer, I wanted to capture not just the performance, but the emotion and significance behind this important milestone.

Finding a New Perspective

Photographing a Bharatanatyam Arangetram is always a privilege. It is a celebration of years of dedication, practice and passion, and I love documenting the energy and emotion that comes with it. Sarayu’s Arangetram at the Lower Hutt Little Theatre was particularly special for me as this was my fifth Arangetram photography event at the venue.

Photographing several Arangetrams at the same venue comes with a creative challenge. The stage, lighting and surroundings can be very similar, and it can be tempting to recreate images that worked well at previous events. But as an experienced photographer in Wellington, I know this is not the right way, and I always try to avoid that.

For Sarayu’s Bharatanatyam Arangetram, I wanted to create something different from anything I had photographed before. Before the performance, I kept my camera completely still (handheld without any tripod) and asked Sarayu to move into different positions and create different poses. This way, I captured those moments through my event photography services.

By combining these moments into a single frame, I was able to create portraits where Sarayu appears multiple times within the same photograph. These images were not part of the actual performance. They came from an idea I had as an dance concert photographer and were created purely as a creative portrait series.

I loved the result. For me, these photographs became a highlight of the day and a reminder that even when the surroundings are familiar, there is always room to see things differently.

Capturing the Arangetram

After creating these portraits, it was time to focus on what the day was truly about: Sarayu’s Arangetram. From the intricate movements and expressive gestures to the powerful moments on stage, my goal was to document the performance as it unfolded naturally with dance and live performance photography.

Bharatanatyam photography is about much more than simply photographing dance poses. Timing is everything. A fraction of a second can make the difference between an ordinary frame and an image that captures the strength, expression and beauty of a performance.

Throughout the event photoshoot, I focused on preserving those important moments—the details, the movements, the expressions and the atmosphere created by Sarayu’s performance.

A Reminder to Keep Looking for Something New

This was my fifth Arangetram photography experience, and photographing multiple Bharatanatyam events at the same venue has taught me something important.

The location may be familiar. The lighting may be similar. But creativity does not have to repeat itself.

Every event gives me an opportunity to see things differently, experiment with new ideas and create photographs that are unique to the person and the story in front of my camera.

Sarayu’s Bharatanatyam Arangetram at Lower Hutt Little Theatre was a beautiful celebration of her journey in dance, and I feel incredibly grateful to have been there to document it. And for me personally, it was also a reminder that sometimes the most exciting photographs happen when you step away from what you have done before and give a new idea a chance.
