SURPRISE PROPOSAL AT BREAKER BAY, WELLINGTON |FENG & HAILEY’S ENGAGEMENT PHOTOSHOOT

There are some evenings in Wellington when everything simply comes together. The weather is calm, the light is beautiful, the ocean is peaceful, and for a few hours, Wellington gives you the kind of sunset that feels almost too good to be true.

That was exactly the kind of evening Feng had hoped for when he planned his surprise proposal to Hailey at Point Dorset, Breaker Bay. On the 22nd of March, at around 6pm, with a beautiful peachy sky developing over the ocean, Feng got down on one knee and asked Hailey the most important question of his life, and she had absolutely no idea it was coming. And as an engagement photographer, I always value such pure and raw emotions.

PLANNING A SURPRISE PROPOSAL IN WELLINGTON

A surprise proposal is one of those moments where timing and location matter just as much as the proposal itself. Feng and I met at a coffee shop to talk through the plan. We discussed the location, timing and how we could make the proposal feel natural while still giving us the best opportunity to capture the moment through engagement photography services.

During the engagement photo session, one of the most important things we considered was Hailey’s personality and what she would enjoy. Feng knew that she loved beaches, so a coastal location felt like the perfect choice. We eventually settled on Point Dorset at Breaker Bay. It was a beautiful choice.

The combination of the ocean, rocky coastline and open views made it an incredible setting for an intimate Wellington proposal. And, as it turned out, we were incredibly lucky with the weather. What else could I ask for as a professional photographer to capture such a precious moment in this setting?

A PERFECT WELLINGTON SUNSET AT POINT DORSET

Anyone who knows Wellington knows that a calm, wind-free evening can sometimes feel like a luxury. But on this evening, we got exactly that. The 22nd of March gave us beautiful weather, almost no wind and a gorgeous sunset. As the sun began to drop, the sky started taking on soft peachy tones, creating a beautiful backdrop over the water.

It was one of those rare Wellington evenings where you almost don’t want the sun to go down.

Everything was ready.

The location was perfect.

The light was beautiful.

And Feng was ready.

All that was left was for Hailey to arrive.

THE MOMENT FENG PROPOSED

The beauty of a surprise proposal is that, for the person being photographed, there is no second take. Everything happens once. Feng carefully made his way into position, and when the moment was right, he got down on one knee.

He had even arranged a customised ring for Hailey, making the moment even more personal. And then he asked her to marry him. Hailey’s reaction was everything you would hope for from a surprise proposal.

There were tears, excitement, laughter and a big hug as the reality of what had just happened sank in. For me, these are the moments that make surprise proposal photography so special. It’s not just about photographing someone putting a ring on their partner’s finger.

It’s about capturing the few seconds immediately before the question, the realisation of what is happening, the reaction, and everything that follows. And because Hailey didn’t know I was there to photograph the proposal, I was able to capture those genuine emotions as they unfolded naturally.

FROM SURPRISE PROPOSAL TO COUPLE PORTRAITS

Once Hailey had said yes and the surprise was over, I introduced myself properly and explained that I had been there to photograph the proposal. After the initial excitement and hugs, we continued with a relaxed couple photography session around Point Dorset and Breaker Bay.

This part of the session was completely different. The surprise was over, the nerves had disappeared, and Feng and Hailey could simply enjoy being together and celebrate what had just happened. The evening light was beautiful, with warm peach and golden tones across the sky. The calm conditions also meant we could take our time and make the most of the coastal surroundings.

We had a total of around one and a half hours for the engagement photography session.

KEEPING THE PROPOSAL PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION RELAXED

There was one more thing I had to keep in mind while photographing Feng and Hailey. Feng had planned a special dinner for them after the proposal. That meant I wanted to make sure we had enough time to capture the proposal and a beautiful set of couple portraits without making the photography session feel rushed, while also making sure they could leave on time for their dinner.

For me, this is an important part of photographing a surprise proposal. The photography should be part of the experience—not something that takes over the experience. We had enough time to capture the important moments, explore the beautiful surroundings and create a collection of portraits that reflected the excitement of the evening.

Then it was time for Feng and Hailey to continue celebrating on their own.

WHY BREAKER BAY IS A BEAUTIFUL PROPOSAL LOCATION

Breaker Bay is one of those Wellington locations that offers a wonderful combination of coastline, open skies and beautiful evening light. Point Dorset, in particular, provides a dramatic coastal setting without needing an elaborate setup.

For couples who love the ocean and want something intimate and natural, it can be a beautiful option for a Wellington surprise proposal. And while Wellington weather can sometimes make planning an outdoor proposal challenging, when you get an evening like this one—calm conditions, no wind and a beautiful sunset—it can be absolutely magical.

That’s where having a photographer involved beforehand can make a big difference. For Feng and Hailey, we were able to plan everything together over coffee, keeping Hailey’s love for beaches in mind while making sure the timing worked with the evening light.

The result was a proposal that felt completely natural to Hailey and gave us the perfect setting to document the beginning of a new chapter for them.
